CHIMPCAM!!!

My friend, Spike sent this to me. Monkey's makin' movies! It's Chimpcam, a documentary made by monkeys for monkeys! I still haven't found it on the boob tube, but my DVR will be set.

Spike found it on Gizmodo.

Fire good, chimp smart

Curious George can conceive fire.
Why wouldn't any chimp?

I always amazes me how people are surprised when they figure out how well an animal can grasp an intangible concept let alone something tangible, albeit hot, like fire.

A Senegal chimp has demonstrated a dance to indicate fire to his fellow chimps. That this is put into words on a science website is no surprise, but that this is put into words as if it's a surprise is insulting. Chimps unite.

I guess I'd be surprised if we found an arsonist chimp.

Monkeys recognize pals

Why shouldn't they? Monkeys would recognize pictures of their pals just the same as you would.

Yahoo science type story about it here.

Monkey see, monkey recognize!

Monster monkey dolls at toy art show

These monkeys were designed by Bianca Panzram.

I went to the MF Gallery opening of the 2009 MF Toy Show last night in Brooklyn, NY. There were lots of crazy toys designed by talented artists. I wanted to take everything home. Some of it was gross, some was cute, some was weird, but nothing was conventional, and everything was inspirational.
These simple striped monkeys by Bianca Panzram were my favorites.
Artists and studios included:
Cupco! (fun site!)
Elmer Presslee (bonus monkey on the front page of the site)
Nikki Taylor (did I find the right artist here?)
Mary Doyle (bonus chimp on front page of the site :)

I'm thinking of heading back to buy a piece or two. I highly recommend it if you are into toys, in the toy industry, or just need to be inspired by some wicked art.

Infinite monkeys

Well, someone finally tried it… to a miserable, failing extent. Someone gave "infinite" monkeys a million years to type Shakespeare. In the short time they gave, and the few monkeys they used, they did get mostly the letter "S," so isn't that a start?

We need more time!

Smoking monkey

A cigarette smoking monkey at Forbidden Planet.
[identified as Frank Cho's Monkey by Isaac Bidwell]

I make a point of stopping in Forbidden Planet every time I'm near Union Square in NYC. I don't know who the character is, but this vinyl monkey with a cigarette in his mouth was in one of the display cases.

Angry T-shirt

Saw this poorly drawn version of the Family Guy monkey on a T-shirt at the Union Square Market in NYC this summer.

Chimpanzee T-shirt

Chimp silkscreen T-shirt.

I saw this guy on the subway more than a year ago, and asked to take a picture of his shirt. All I had was my phone camera, and I had no clue how to get the picture. My wife rescued me with instructions. I feel like a dork, it was so simple.

This is a CG portrait done by Belgian artist Jacques Defontaine that I found in an artical on Noupe.com showing realistic computer generated portraits.

Below is another CG image by Olivier Ponsonnet from the same article

Chimpanzee funeral

Rest in peace Dorothy the chimp.

This image is from The Inquisitr. A chimp named Dorothy at a chimpanzee rescue center died, and all her friends and family watched in silence as she was buried :(

Just got this in an email:

I don't care if you lick windows,
take the special bus or occasionally pee on yourself.
You hang in there, sunshine-you're friggin' special.
Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad,
is a full minute of happiness you'll never get back.
Today's Message of the Day is:
Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly,
Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile.
Life may not be the party we hoped for,
but while we're here, we should dance.

Cute. A bit rough around the edges, but the sentiment is nice.

Monkey artist

It's been a while since I've updated here. A fun project like this should not go neglected for so long.
Thanks go to Rik for finding this image in his Facebook friend's photo album
